Be the change you want to see in the world! - Yoga and politics

Updated: Mar 22, 2021

Some yogis prefer to say apolitical. However, there is a universal need for wellness and more fairness. Recent occurrences all too well have shown what damage apolitical behaviour can do. Yoga is about our interconnection and interdependence, which goes far beyond a small Hove community. If the rest of the country decides on things that will affect us, we must stand up and contribute to positive change for all. Our freedom depends on the actions around us. We are not separate from the suffering around us, nor are we separate from the damage done to our planet. It is our ethical duty to become engaged. The future is in conscious activism. Be the change you want to see in others! Be the change you want to see in the world!

There is a universal need for wellness and more fairness.

We have an intrinsic privilege in many things we are not even conscious about.

When we become aware of this, we also have potential empowerment that we can share with others. If you read for leisure, go to the gym or a yoga studio, you are among the privileged. Recognise this and choose what you will do with the power of your privilege and use it to help and empower others.

Take yoga off the mat, but also take care of yourself. Commit to self-care rituals and stay aligned with your centre. Contemplate where the Warrior poses come in handy off the mat. Show ferocious, loving-kindness and empower and care for those not privileged.

In a world that deprives the poor more and discriminates against people, we as yogis must stand up (I find this more yogic than standing on your head or doing any other amazing posture). Taking a stance and attitude and showing a heart to disadvantaged people who suffer and need our help has never been so big. We must take a stand against racism and discrimination! This action is being a real warrior nowadays. We can stay kind with a soft face but firm!

Be aware that “yoga” in many aspects is a “privilege”. It is a privilege to go to classes, and it is even a privilege to teach it.

“A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.”

Henry Brooks Adams
